5 Signs It's Time to Re-Tile Your Bathroom

Bathrooms don't last forever. Even a well-built bathroom will eventually show its age — and tiling is usually the first thing to go.

The tricky part is knowing when to act. Retile too early and you've spent money unnecessarily. Wait too long and a simple retile turns into a major repair job involving water damage and structural work.

After 20+ years as a Brisbane tiler, here are the five signs that tell you it's time to seriously consider retiling your bathroom.

1. Cracked, crumbling or missing grout

Grout is the first line of defence against water getting behind your tiles. When grout starts cracking, crumbling or falling out, water has a clear path into the structure underneath.

A small amount of grout damage can sometimes be repaired. But widespread cracked or missing grout — especially in the shower — is a warning sign. It often means the bathroom has reached the end of its service life, and water may already be getting where it shouldn't.

2. Loose, lifting or “hollow” tiles

Tap gently across your bathroom tiles. A solid sound is good. A hollow sound means the tile has lost its bond with the surface underneath.

Loose or hollow tiles are a problem for two reasons: they can crack or come away entirely, and they signal that water or movement has compromised the installation. A few hollow tiles in an older bathroom often point to a bigger issue beneath the surface.

3. Persistent mould you can't get rid of

Surface mould on grout is common and usually cleanable. But mould that keeps coming back no matter how often you clean it — or mould appearing in the same spots, in corners, or seeping from behind tiles — is different.

Persistent mould often means moisture is trapped behind the tiles. That points to failed or failing waterproofing, and it's a strong sign the bathroom needs more than a clean.

4. Water stains or damage in adjoining areas

Sometimes the clearest sign of a bathroom problem appears outside the bathroom. Look for:

• Stains or bubbling paint on the other side of bathroom walls

• Damaged or lifting skirting boards near the bathroom

• Soft or discoloured flooring in adjoining rooms

• A musty smell that won't go away

If water is escaping the bathroom and affecting other parts of your home, the waterproofing has likely failed — and retiling (with new waterproofing) is needed before the damage spreads.

5. The bathroom is simply dated

Not every reason to retile is a problem. Sometimes the tiling is structurally fine but the bathroom just looks tired — dated colours, small old-fashioned tiles, a style that no longer suits your home.

There's nothing wrong with retiling for looks alone. A modern retile dramatically lifts the feel of your whole home, and if you're planning to sell, an updated bathroom is one of the best investments you can make.

Why acting early saves you money

Here's the key lesson from two decades in the trade: bathroom problems only get more expensive over time. A bathroom retiled at the first signs of wear is a relatively straightforward job. The same bathroom left for another few years — while water quietly damages the structure underneath — becomes a much bigger, costlier project involving repairs, not just tiling.
