What Australian Standards Require for Balcony Waterproofing
Balcony waterproofing in Australia is governed by AS 4654.2 (Waterproofing Membranes for External Above-Ground Use) and the National Construction Code. Key requirements include:
The waterproofing membrane must be applied to the full balcony floor area and turned up the walls to a minimum height of 100mm.
All penetrations (drainage outlets, balustrade fixings, pipe penetrations) must be properly sealed and integrated into the waterproofing system.
The membrane must be applied at the manufacturer's specified thickness and allowed to fully cure before tiling.
The balcony must be laid to fall to ensure water drains away from the building — a minimum fall of 1:100 is generally required.
Movement joints must be incorporated at all junctions and at maximum specified intervals to accommodate thermal movement.
