How to Waterproof a Laundry Floor Properly

A laundry leak rarely starts as a dramatic flood. More often, it is a slow drip behind the washing machine, water creeping under a skirting board, or moisture working through cracked grout over time. Knowing how to waterproof a laundry floor properly protects the room below, adjacent walls and the structure of your home, particularly where a laundry sits on an upper level or joins timber flooring.

Tiles are hard-wearing and easy to clean, but they are not the waterproof layer. Neither is grout. The protection comes from the membrane installed beneath the tiles, with careful detailing around pipe penetrations, wall junctions and any floor waste.

Does every laundry floor need waterproofing?

The required level of waterproofing depends on the laundry layout, the construction of the home and the applicable National Construction Code requirements. A laundry with a floor waste, a shower-style hobless threshold, or a location above another habitable room carries more risk than a ground-floor laundry on a concrete slab.

In many renovations, fully waterproofing the laundry floor is the sensible long-term choice even where a smaller treatment may be permitted. It provides a contained barrier if a hose fails or an appliance overflows. This is particularly worthwhile in family homes, investment properties and compact laundries where cabinetry, plumbing and appliances leave little room to spot a leak early.

A qualified waterproofing contractor can assess whether the floor should be fully tanked, whether the membrane needs to extend up the walls, and how the work needs to tie into a floor waste. Do not assume a bathroom approach automatically suits every laundry. The details should match the room and the way water can escape.

How to waterproof a laundry floor: the right process

Waterproofing is a system, not a single coat painted over a floor. The substrate, primer, membrane, bond breakers, sealant and adhesive must work together. Skipping preparation or mixing incompatible products is where many failures begin.

Start with a sound, clean substrate

Remove old tiles, adhesive, loose screed, dust, oil and any friable material until the base is clean and stable. Concrete should be properly cured and free from major cracking. Timber sheet flooring must be securely fixed, stiff enough for tiling and suitable for wet-area use.

The floor also needs the correct falls if there is a floor waste. Water should move towards the waste, not settle along walls or beneath the washing machine. Creating falls after waterproofing can damage the membrane, so levelling and screeding work needs to be planned before the system is applied.

Any cracks, holes or uneven areas should be repaired using a compatible product. This is not just about getting a flat tile finish. A membrane laid over an unstable or contaminated surface cannot provide reliable protection.

Check drainage and plumbing before applying membrane

A floor waste must sit at the correct height to suit the screed, membrane, tile adhesive and finished tile. It also needs to be compatible with the waterproofing detail so the membrane can be properly dressed and sealed to the waste flange.

Plan the appliance connections as well. Water supply pipes, waste pipes and conduits passing through the floor or wall create penetrations that need careful sealing. If plumbing is moved after waterproofing, the barrier may be compromised and require repair before tiling continues.

Where possible, keep the washing machine hoses accessible and use quality fittings. Waterproofing limits the damage from a leak, but it is not a substitute for sound plumbing or regular checks behind appliances.

Prime the floor and wall junctions

Most liquid membrane systems require a primer matched to the substrate. Primer improves adhesion and helps control how the surface absorbs the membrane. Applying membrane directly to a dusty slab, or using a primer not approved for the product, can lead to poor bonding.

The primer must dry as directed by the manufacturer before the next stage. Rushing this step can trap moisture or affect the membrane's cure. Reinforce corners, joints and penetrations

The floor-to-wall junction is one of the most important areas in the room. Movement can occur where different materials meet, and water naturally finds these weak points. Pipe penetrations need purpose-made collars or compatible flexible detailing, not simply a heavy brush of membrane around the pipe. The same care applies at the floor waste. These are small areas, but they are where a well-finished waterproofing job earns its value.

If the laundry opens onto a hallway, bedroom or timber floor, the doorway detail matters too. A contained threshold, correct membrane termination and sensible floor levels help stop water from travelling out of the room during an overflow.

Apply the membrane to the required coverage

Liquid membrane is normally applied in multiple coats to achieve the required dry film thickness. One thin coat may look covered, but it may not provide a continuous waterproof barrier once cured. Corners, penetrations and the area around the floor waste need full coverage without pinholes or missed edges.

The membrane should extend across the floor and up adjoining walls to the required height for the design. The exact height and extent vary according to the room, wall construction and applicable requirements. In higher-risk layouts, such as an upstairs laundry or a room with a floor waste, broader coverage gives better protection.

Allow each coat to cure for the specified time. Do not walk on it, stack tiles on it or begin tiling early because the surface feels dry. Waterproofing can be damaged before it has developed its proper strength.

Protect the finished membrane during tiling

Once cured, inspect the membrane before tiles go down. Look for punctures, thin patches, gaps at corners and incomplete seals around penetrations. Any damage should be repaired using the same approved system and allowed to cure again.

Use a tile adhesive suitable for the membrane and tile type. During installation, avoid dragging sharp tile edges, dropping tools or cutting directly on the floor. A waterproof membrane can be damaged surprisingly easily, and a hidden puncture may not show itself until water finds it months later.

At wall-to-floor junctions and other movement joints, use a flexible sanitary sealant rather than hard grout. Grout can crack as the building moves. Flexible joints allow movement while maintaining a clean, water-resistant finish.

Common shortcuts that cause laundry water damage

The most common mistake is treating grout or silicone as the waterproofing. They are finish materials, not the primary barrier. Another is applying membrane over a floor that has not been cleaned, repaired or correctly prepared.

Poor floor waste detailing is also a frequent problem. If the membrane does not form a proper seal at the waste, water can track below the tiles and into the surrounding structure. In a laundry without a floor waste, it is still essential to think through where overflow water may go and whether the doorway and adjacent flooring are adequately protected.

Finally, avoid having several trades work around an unprotected membrane without coordination. Plumbers, cabinet installers and tilers can all accidentally damage the waterproofed surface if penetrations and fixings are not planned early.

When professional waterproofing is the better option

A small ground-floor laundry may appear straightforward, but the consequences of failure are rarely small. Water damage can affect cabinetry, wall linings, framing, ceilings below and neighbouring rooms before there are visible signs.
