Pool Tiling in Brisbane: Everything You Need to Know Before You Start

A tiled pool is one of the most striking features a Queensland home can have. Whether it's a sleek lap pool in Springfield, a resort-style plunge pool in Jimboomba, or a family pool in Greenbank, the right pool tiling transforms a functional water feature into a genuine showpiece. But pool tiling is also one of the most technically demanding tiling applications — and getting it wrong can be extremely costly.

At Quality Aussie Tilers, we've completed pool tiling projects across the Logan and Ipswich regions for over 20 years. In this guide, we're sharing everything you need to know before you start your pool tiling project — from tile selection and waterproofing through to costs and maintenance.

Why Pool Tiling Is Different to Other Tiling Applications

Pool tiling operates in one of the harshest environments any tile will ever face. Tiles are permanently submerged in chemically treated water, exposed to UV radiation, subject to significant thermal expansion and contraction, and under constant hydrostatic pressure. The adhesive, grout, and waterproofing systems used in pool tiling must be specifically rated for these conditions — standard bathroom products simply won't cut it.

Choosing the Right Tiles for Your Pool

Glass Mosaic Tiles

Glass mosaic tiles are the most popular choice for pool interiors across South-East Queensland. They're non-porous, highly resistant to pool chemicals, and available in a stunning range of colours and finishes. The way they interact with light — both natural and artificial — creates that beautiful shimmering effect that makes a tiled pool so visually striking. They're also relatively easy to repair if individual tiles are damaged.

Porcelain Pool Tiles

Porcelain tiles are an excellent choice for pool surrounds, steps, and waterline applications. They're dense, low-porosity, and highly durable. For pool interiors, you'll need to specify tiles that are rated for full immersion and chemical resistance. Large-format porcelain tiles are increasingly popular for contemporary pool designs, creating a clean, seamless look.

Natural Stone Pool Tiles

Natural stone — particularly travertine and bluestone — is a popular choice for pool surrounds and coping in Queensland. It's beautiful, durable, and stays relatively cool underfoot in the Queensland sun. However, natural stone used around pools must be sealed regularly and requires more maintenance than porcelain or glass. It's also important to choose a stone with adequate slip resistance for wet pool surrounds.

Waterproofing for Pool Tiling

Pool waterproofing is a specialist application that goes well beyond standard bathroom waterproofing. The waterproofing system must be able to withstand permanent water immersion, hydrostatic pressure from both inside and outside the pool shell, chemical exposure from pool sanitisers, and significant thermal movement.

We use premium, pool-rated waterproofing systems that are specifically designed for these conditions. The waterproofing is applied to the pool shell before any tiling begins, with particular attention to all junctions, penetrations, and the waterline area — which is subject to the most movement and chemical exposure.

The Importance of the Waterline

The waterline of a pool — the band of tiles at the water's surface — is the most technically demanding area of any pool tiling project. It's subject to constant wetting and drying cycles, chemical concentration, UV exposure, and thermal movement. The tiles used at the waterline must be specifically rated for this application, and the installation must be executed with precision to ensure long-term performance.

Pool Tiling Costs in Brisbane (2025)

Pool tiling costs vary significantly depending on pool size, tile type, and the complexity of the installation. As a general guide for South-East Queensland:

  • Small plunge pool (up to 20m²): $4,000–$10,000 for tiling and waterproofing

  • Standard family pool (20–50m²): $10,000–$25,000 for tiling and waterproofing

  • Large or resort-style pool (50m²+): $25,000–$60,000+ depending on tile selection and complexity

  • Pool surround and coping tiling: $80–$180 per square metre for labour

Pool Tile Maintenance in Queensland

Queensland's climate — with its intense UV, high temperatures, and heavy summer rainfall — means pool tiles need regular attention to stay looking their best. Key maintenance tasks include regular cleaning to remove calcium and mineral deposits at the waterline, checking and maintaining correct pool chemistry to prevent tile and grout damage, inspecting grout joints annually and regrouting where necessary, and resealing natural stone surrounds every 1–2 years.
