For builders working across the Logan and Ipswich corridors — from Springfield and Flagstone through to Jimboomba and Cedar Grove — finding a reliable, quality tiling contractor is one of the most important relationships you can build. Tiling is one of the most visible trades on any project, and the quality of the tiling work reflects directly on the builder's reputation.
At Quality Aussie Tilers, we work with builders across South-East Queensland on residential and commercial projects of all sizes. Here's our guide to finding, briefing, and working with a premium tiling contractor — and what to look for to ensure your projects are delivered to the highest standard.
What to Look for in a Tiling Contractor
QBCC licence: This is non-negotiable. Always verify your tiling contractor holds a current Queensland Building and Construction Commission licence before engaging them.
Insurance: Ensure the contractor carries adequate public liability insurance (minimum $5 million) and workers' compensation insurance.
Knowledge of Australian Standards: Your tiling contractor should be able to speak confidently about AS 3958.1, AS 3740, AS 4586, and the NCC requirements relevant to your project.
Programme reliability: Can they commit to a start date and complete the work within the agreed timeframe? Delays in tiling can have significant downstream impacts on your project.
Communication: A good tiling contractor communicates proactively — flagging issues early, providing progress updates, and responding promptly to queries.
Briefing Your Tiling Contractor
The quality of the brief you provide to your tiling contractor directly affects the quality of the outcome. A good brief should include:
Detailed drawings and specifications: Including tile layouts, tile specifications, waterproofing requirements, and any special details such as niches, feature walls, or custom elements.
Programme requirements: When do you need the tiling to start and finish? What are the key milestones?
Substrate information: What is the substrate? Has it been prepared? Are there any known issues?
Tile supply: Are tiles being supplied by the builder or the tiling contractor? If by the builder, when will they be on site?
Access and site conditions: What are the access arrangements? Are there any site-specific requirements or restrictions?
Substrate Handover: Your Responsibility
One of the most common sources of conflict between builders and tiling contractors is the condition of the substrate at handover. The tiling contractor is responsible for the quality of the tiling installation — but they can only work with what they're given. If the substrate is uneven, contaminated, or structurally compromised, the tiling contractor will either need to do additional preparation work (at additional cost) or the installation will be compromised.
Agree on substrate acceptance criteria before work begins, and ensure the substrate is inspected and signed off before tiling commences. This protects both parties and sets the project up for success.
Building a Long-Term Relationship
The best builder-tiler relationships are long-term partnerships built on mutual trust, clear communication, and consistent quality. When you find a tiling contractor who delivers quality work, communicates well, and meets their programme commitments, hold onto them. The value of a reliable tiling partner — particularly in a busy market — is enormous.
