Why Silicone Finishing Makes or Breaks a Tiling Job

If you want to instantly tell the difference between a quality tiling job and a cheap one, look at the silicone. The silicone joints — at the floor-wall junction, in internal corners, and around fixtures — are one of the most telling indicators of a tiler's skill and attention to detail. A neat, consistent silicone bead speaks volumes about the quality of the entire installation. A messy, cracked, or missing silicone joint tells a different story.
At Quality Aussie Tilers, based in New Beith and servicing Greenbank, Springfield, Jimboomba, Boronia Heights, Cedar Grove, Flagstone, and surrounding suburbs, we take silicone finishing seriously. Here's why it matters so much — and what you should look for.
What Are Movement Joints and Why Do They Exist?
Buildings move. It's a fact of construction. Thermal expansion and contraction, structural settlement, and substrate movement all cause the building to flex and shift — often imperceptibly, but enough to stress rigid materials like grout. Movement joints are designed to accommodate this movement by providing a flexible break in the tiled surface at strategic locations.
Under AS 3958.1, movement joints must be provided at all junctions between floor and wall tiles, at all internal corners, around all fixtures and fittings, and at maximum specified intervals across large tiled areas. These joints must be filled with a flexible sealant — silicone — not grout.
What Happens When Grout Is Used Instead of Silicone?
Grout is a rigid material. When it's used in a movement joint, it will crack — it's not a question of if, but when. Once the grout cracks, water can penetrate behind the tiles, compromising the waterproofing membrane and potentially causing significant damage. In a bathroom, this is a serious problem. In a shower recess, it can lead to waterproofing failure and all the consequences that come with it.
We see grouted movement joints in bathrooms across Munruben, Glenlogan, South Maclean, and Silverbark Ridge regularly — almost always in installations done by tilers who either didn't know better or were cutting corners. It's one of the most common causes of premature tiling failure.
Choosing the Right Silicone
Not all silicone is created equal. For bathroom and wet area applications, you need a silicone that is specifically formulated for wet areas, contains anti-mould additives to resist mould growth in Queensland's humid climate, is colour-matched to the grout for a seamless appearance, and is flexible enough to accommodate the expected movement.
For outdoor applications, the silicone must also be UV-stable and rated for external use. Using an indoor silicone outdoors will result in rapid degradation under Queensland's intense UV radiation.
The Art of a Good Silicone Bead
Applying a neat, consistent silicone bead is a skill that takes practice. The joint must be clean and dry before application. The silicone must be applied in a single, continuous bead at the correct depth. It must then be tooled — smoothed and shaped — to create a concave profile that sheds water and looks professional. Any excess silicone must be removed cleanly before it cures.
A poorly applied silicone bead — lumpy, inconsistent, or with silicone smeared across the adjacent tiles — is both unsightly and less effective at its primary function of sealing the joint.
When to Replace Silicone
Silicone doesn't last forever. Over time, it can discolour, crack, or develop mould that can't be cleaned. When this happens, the old silicone should be completely removed and replaced with fresh silicone. This is a relatively simple job that makes a significant difference to both the appearance and the waterproofing integrity of a bathroom. We recommend inspecting silicone joints annually and replacing them every 5–10 years, or sooner if they show signs of deterioration.
